Citizens Advice Reports 9,000 Roofing Scam Complaints
Citizens Advice reported that out of 9,000 complaints about roofing issues received in the past year, nearly 2,205 were suspected scams. These scams typically involve incomplete or unnecessary roofing work, leaving homeowners thousands of pounds out of pocket. One third of roofing complaints involved fraudulent activities, with an increase from 2,098 suspected cases the year before. Dame Clare Moriarty, chief executive of Citizens Advice, emphasized that scammers target inaccessible roofs, knowing most homeowners cannot easily inspect the work themselves. She advises consumers to check traders thoroughly before hiring. One case involved Crystal from the Midlands, who was charged £5,500 for a roofing job that went unfinished and later caused significant water damage. Scammers are often known to use aggressive and intimidating tactics, exploiting vulnerable homeowners. In another instance, Charlotte from north eastern England was coerced into paying £3,500 after scammers falsely claimed that urgent repairs were needed. The report suggests an increasing trend in roofing scams and underscores the importance of being vigilant and informed when hiring roofers. Homeowners should seek references, ensure agreements are in writing, and know their rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. This information is crucial for preventing financial loss and ensuring necessary repairs are completed adequately.
