Villa Vie Odyssey suspends voyage as fuel costs hit $8,000 per cabin

Villa Vie Odyssey, a US-based luxury cruise ship operator, suspended its global voyage due to sharp increases in fuel costs, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia. The ship, designed to carry up to 650 passengers, was around 750 days into its planned 3.5-year trip covering nearly 150 countries. There were approximately 200 passengers on board at the time of suspension. Fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia surged to $8,000 monthly from $1,800, driven by global fuel price rises linked to the Iran war. The company attempted to reduce fuel usage by slowing the itinerary and increasing time spent in ports, but these measures could not offset the increase. Villa Vie Odyssey's operator announced a 60-day restructuring and recapitalization plan, though the outcome is uncertain. The suspension follows previous delays and repair-related costs. The vessel features amenities including bars, restaurants, a pool deck, and a pickleball court. The cabins offer permanent residencies priced between $120,000 and $440,000 or rental options starting at $3,500 per month. This disruption signals operational challenges in luxury travel linked to rising fuel expenses, impacting both the company’s finances and passenger experience.
