VAT Cut to 5% for Household Electricity Bills Starting October

The UK government will cut VAT from 5% on household electricity bills starting October 1, saving a typical household about £45 annually. This measure is part of Prime Minister Andy Burnham's effort to address the cost of living issue and will cost the government approximately £850 million this financial year. Funding for the cut will come from the cancellation of the Digital ID programme, projected to save £1.8 billion over the next three years. The reduced VAT will apply in England, Scotland, and Wales, with equivalent funding provided to Northern Ireland, aiming to alleviate pressure on households facing rising energy prices.
